Who Am I?

Who am I? We've all asked that question, Christian or not. We all know who we are. We'll pull out our social security number and birth certificate, or point to some of our favorite things and describe our personality type. But for some reason those things don't seem to make up the real us. We know that there's something more that we can't quite figure out; something bigger and deeper, not just what appears on the surface.
I appreciate some of the lines in the song Who Am I? by Casting Crowns:
Not because of who I am
But because of what You've done
Not because of what I've done
But because of who You are
I am the flower quickly fading
Here today and gone tomorrow
A wave tossed in the ocean
A vapor in the wind
Still you hear me when I'm calling
Lord you catch me when I'm falling
You've told me who I am
I am Yours
Here lies my identity. I may have been a fading flower, a tossing wave, a wisp of steam, but I am no longer! Who I truly am, my identity at the very core of my being, is no longer wrapped up in myself. As it says at the beginning of the song: not because of who I am or what I have done, but because of Christ. I have become a precious thing, a piece of beauty, glorious beyond measure. I did not do this to myself. Christ did it.
Sometimes I forget who I am. I slip into old ways and think that God will no longer love me because of what I've done. I put my identity into a "me box." I begin to think that who I am is because of what I've done. But every time I forget who I truly am, He comes back and reminds me. I am His. Nothing else need be said.

Hey Kaisha! Great post! That is so good...and I dare say that song is a good summary of what we've been reading in Holiness by Grace! Plus about a thousand other great things that are packed into the book!

I love this song as well. It's a great reminder of who we really are in Christ and where our true identity lies. It's NOTHING about us and ALL about Him! Only He can take a "flower quickly fading" and make it shine beautiful with new life in Him!

Hey Kaish,
This is a great post. I love the description of who you are - "A precious thing, a piece of beauty, glorious beyond measure" - that is who you really are and even though it may seem awkward to say so it really is OK to say that because we know that God is responsible for the beauty. I love the analogy of the "me box" - that is a perfect way to say that - you are a clever and deep thinking young lady - God is doing a great work in you. BTW I love that Casting Crowns song.

Kaish, I really loved this post. Excellent job articulating a little piece of our identity in Christ! Having this solidly fixed in our minds resolves a dozen areas of wrong thinking before it happens and also keeps our security in Him rather than what the people around us think. Love you!

Hey Kaish, great thoughts! Love it! Yes and amen! Oh that we might ever remember, have it engrained on our minds that we are nothing of value, and might that fact sink in deep and cutting, we as people tend to get very caught up in ourselves and worth. Then, as we are feeling the emptiness of ourselves, feeling naked and humbled, may we be lifted high with the knowledge of who we are before God!! Forgiven, at peace, His beloved children! and He gave us this thru Christ! Oh, how sweet! Thanks kaish! love ya!
